Description
Arcade Manufacturing Co. of Freeport, Illinois (1868-1943
)
Refurbished #1431, Green Sedan, 3.5" long, w/original rubber tires. Hand Painted, Ca 1930's.
Arcade
started out
primarily
making household items,
& hardware
.
1887
-
Arcade
began making cast iron toys
,
as a small sideline,
to use up scraps from their full size manufacturing.
E
ventually making over 300 item
s,
including miniature household items, Buggies, Tractors, Banks, Doll House Furniture,
&
eventually
Toy
Cars.
1902
- Arcade offered their first Catalog,
but toys were still a minor part of the business.
1921
- Their first big toy success was with the Yellow Cab toy cars. What had been just a sideline of making toys, quickly turned into their main focus. Execs decided to dominate the market by making higher quality - higher priced toys, that would be exact replicas of the real thing. They were very successful, despite being more expensive.
1941
- When the US joined in WWII, manufacturing in the US turned it's attention to the war effort. Most Post war toys were made of plastic & aluminum, & Arcade never manufactured toys again.
Dating:
I could find no specific dating information online for Arcade toys, but since the car this toy is likely based on is from 1936, and Arcade was pretty much out of the toy business by 1941, I think it's safe to assume this was manufactured sometime in the 5 yrs between 1936-1941.
Condition:
There are no cracks, or damage on this toy, except the tires, which
seem to be original, & show their age.
This is cast iron, so not 100% smooth - as expected (
& as seen in the pictures
), but it is mighty smooth for cast iron, so - Well done, Arcade!
This toy came to me in need of some work, so I de-rusted, & removed the original paint,
degreased,
then repainted the body in a light aqua green, with metallic Gray fenders, & running boards. The bumpers, grill, & headlights were done in a Silver tone, before applying a Satin Clear Coat, to protect the finish.
This is one of those gorgeous vehicles from the 1930's - the closest match I found was a 1936
Cadillac
Fleetwood - Aerodynamic Coupe. A truly gorgeous car. (
See picture 11, for a real one for comparison
).
Please Note
:
Listing Photos are a
Magnification
, so the car looks a lot better in person than in the photos. Any speck of dust, or brush mark is highlighted in the pictures, when the naked eye can't even see that. I'm always shocked by how bad things look in the pictures, vs in person.

This car is so gorgeous on my desk, & I think it will look great on yours, as well.

Any item of this age is going to show nicks & dings, which can be seen in the photos.
