When most bankrupt Northeast railroads were united into one company, Conrail, the USRA was aware that the region needed some competition for 'Big Blue.'
The only independent railroad ready to take up the challenge of expanding into Conrail's territory was the fabled Delaware & Hudson.
Follow its struggles to compete in this new environment from 1976 until it too was caught up in the financial malaise and vanished in 1991.
