Sub-titled “How Railroads Forever Changed the Lower Mississippi Valley,” noted Mississippi historian Milton Winter presents the history of the formation of the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley, a key predecessor of the Illinois Central’s system that penetrated the South all the way to the Gulf Coast. The Y&MV through building it’s own line down the west side of Mississippi plus a key acquisition of the Louisville, New Orleans & Columbus from Memphis to Cairo, IL and Louisville, KY became the anchor of the IC’s Southern network. With the additions of key pieces such as the Alabama & Vicksburg, the Chesapeake, Ohio & Southwestern, and other lines, the IC built quite an empire between Memphis, New Orleans, and other Gulf Coast locations. Illustrations include depots, freight stations, terminal facilities, bridges and trestles, drawbridges, steam boats, rail ferries, lumbering, the towns served, local industries, and railroad employees. Cotton, other agriculture, lumber, and wood products were king here. Considering the scarcity of vintage photographs of deep South railroads, this is an excellent compilation and portrayal of a rarely covered topic. Winter has a well-established reputation as a writer for the Illinois Central Historical Society’s
    Green Diamond”
publication plus additional bookls on Mississippi history, architecture and other topics. This is a 248-page, digitally-printed, perfect-bound softcover. Gloss paper. New shrinkwrapped copies.
Note: The copies offered here, while brand new, were damaged in transit and are therefore offered as-is. Damage may include
dented and creased corners/covers/pages, broken spines, and some edge peeling to the heavy paper covers. Retail on these books was .95. They are offered here at .50 as-is. While physically impacted, this is no way diminishes the quality of the contents or Winter's text and captions. Illinois Central fans will find this a well-researched title.
