Iron Art Co.6" Cast Iron,

"
toy car,

ish?
Iron Art Co
of Phillipsburg, New Jersey was e
stablished in
1955,
by
John Zamarsksi
&
Melvin Friedman.
The
"JM"
(presumably for John & Melvin)
, is seen stamped on the underside of their cars, with the corresponding model #s.
Iron Art
contracted with outside Iron manufacturers, then assembled & painted the items they sold. They sold a wide variety of iron items, trivets, mirrors, toys, & a large variety of wall mounted decorative items. They were a pretty big distributer in the late 1950's & 1960's.
ID:
The "JM" & model number is deeply stamped into the underside of all the Iron Art cars, so it's easily identifiable as theirs, even if the lettering is not always perfectly clear.
In this case, the car is stamped "JM 135", for this sedan. Iron Art did not specify which real vehicles their cars were patterned after in the (
undated
) catalog I found online, so it's all debatable.
I did a lot of research to find out what model this car was, to help date it, so I'm confident this is the
1924 Chevrolet "Touring Superior" model.
That roof style is pretty unique, & I like the wooden spokes on the wheels, like this one has. It's interesting that these really old cars didn't have bumpers, front or back. (
I do love seeing how things changed as years went by.
: )
What my research has taught me is - even back in the day, Car manufacturers blatantly copied one another. Someone hit's on a good look, with lots of buyers, & soon after, everyone else has the nearly identical model for sale. Changing Times don't change that.
These were soft top vehicles, which some people have said is a 1918 Ford Model T, but I've looked at a lot of 1918 Model T's, & this is a much closer match to the 1924 Chevrolet "Touring Superior" model. I can see no difference between this toy & the Chevy, but there are several differences between it & the Ford.
I've included a picture (
#11
) of the 1924 Chevrolet Touring Superior for comparison, & you can be the judge. (
Just search the 1918 Model T, if you're curious
.
There are a lot of pics online
.)
Dating:
The Iron Art Manufacturing Co. opened in 1955, &
was a major distributor of cast iron products through the 1960’s. I've seen a catalog, showing this vehicle, but it's not dated. Having been alive at the time, I can say it looks like a catalog from the late 50's/early 60's, but since cast iron is pretty timeless, it's hard to be sure. Their catalog logo & overall style fits the late 50's/early 60s - before the psychedelics took over.

Condition:
This toy came to me in need of some work, so I degreased, de-rusted, & removed the original paint as needed, then Painted the body in a metallic Blue. A
non-metallic Black was used on the fenders & running boards. When done, a Satin Clear Coat was applied, to protect the finish.
There are no cracks, or damage on this toy. This is cast iron, so it's not 100% smooth - as expected (
& as seen in the pictures
). The Tires are also cast iron, & the car is fully repainted.
Please Note
:
Listing Photos are a
Magnification
, so the car looks a lot better in person than the photos. Any speck of dust, or brush mark is highlighted in the pictures, when the naked eye can't even see that. I'm always shocked by how bad things look in the pictures, vs in person.

This car is looks great on my desk, & I think it will look great on yours, as well.
